Persons with unknown surnames are listed under Unknown. Footstones without headstones and initialed stones are indexed under the assumed surname initial. Special categories are: church (identified on tombstone or record of another church), clergy (identified on tombstones or in records of funerals, especially for another church), fire company, fraternal emblem, funeral home, hospital, medical personnel, military, and stone carver. Names in the Allegheny Circuit Records are indexed. However, those in the Roster of Ministers, Bibliographies, Errata, Staff, and Preface are not. Names on photographed stones appear in italics.

United States locations are indexed under the state name and county name if identified. Abbreviations of local place names are cross-referenced to complete names and, for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, local names are indexed under these particular categories. Foreign locations are indexed under the best general name for the area.
